Meta Heroes Application

Player —
Player Name: Claire
Pronouns: she/her
Are you over 18? Yes
Contact: [plurk.com profile] slanndalous
Current Characters: N/A
Who Invited You?: Pinky
Character —
Character Name: Midnighter
Character Canon: DC Comics
Character Age: unknown
Canon Point: Midnighter #10, before Midnighter is saved from an explosion after the Suicide Squad beats him up and holds him on an airplane rigged to detonate
Link to History: here
Inventory:
  • Handful of communication implants — These are small microchips implanted into a person's neck to create a one-way connection device directly to Midnighter's internal computer. It cannot be used to communicate with anyone else, and only the injected person can begin communication. Midnighter cannot.

(If this is acceptable, how many can Midnighter come with?)

Powers —

Skills:
  • Master combatant and tactician
  • Weapons expertise
  • Pool shark
  • Can operate most transportation vehicles

Superpowers:
  1. Battle Precognition — Midnighter possesses a neural-inductive combat simulator in his head, which allows him to calculate the most likely course of a battle before it even begins.

  2. Enhanced strength, speed, endurance — His musculature is lined with carbon fiber, which boosts his physical feats

  3. Accelerated healing — He does not heal instantly, but he has intentionally ruptured his own eardrums, which eventually healed back completely. Injuries that would kill a normal person can be survived by Midnighter.

  4. Door - a dimensional door that allows him to step through a tear in space and appear elsewhere. I realize this will need to be nerfed. Could it be something where he needs to have been there previously in order to teleport there? Or perhaps only a select few places? If that is still too much, could his Door allow him to teleport back to his housing and only housing?

Limitations:
  • Battle Precognition — While Midnighter's battle precognition makes it difficult to surprise him, that arrogance and reliance is his downfall. He works off of data to establish the most likely probable outcome. So, if he doesn't have much data on someone to work with, or someone changes up their strategy, Midnighter is limited.

Because this super power relies on the other player's consent and participation, there will always be communication around what Mid can and cannot "assume" or "know" in a thread, as well as a disclaimer or opt-in entry with this information.

  • Accelerated Healing — It is not so quick as to heal in real time. When Midnighter is gravely injured, he may continue to fight despite the pain, but in the aftermath it will take days for him to fully heal.

  • Other — He also has no innate defense against magic or abilities that control the mind or body outside of knowing beforehand and preparing if possible.

Personality —
Please EITHER (1) Summarize your character's personality — including motivations, behaviors, and psychology — in 300-600 words OR (2) Respond to the questions below.

  • What were your character's most formative experiences?:
    1. When Midnighter's first romantic partner, Apollo, discovers that he fabricated his "tragic origin story," he admits that he did it so that they would have something in common. It turns into an argument, and Midnighter makes the decision for them both that he is going to terminate the relationship because he "already knows how this will end."

This sets him on a new trajectory, which leads to discovering more about himself. Namely, what can a refurbished murder machine do other than kill?

    2. His obsession with who he was damaged his relationship with Apollo. It also leads him on a wild goose chase to recover a stolen dossier on his previous life before he was kidnapped by scientists, The Gardener and Dr. Bendix.

    3. It isn't until he is forced to choose that he finds peace with himself: kill an ex-lover/grifter but lose the dossier forever, or let him escape and continue wreaking violence on innocent civilians. He kills the man who pretended to love him, thereby destroying the only evidence of his past, and decides to accept himself for what he is now, not what he was.

  • What values, morals, and/or philosophies does your character live by, and how are those beliefs demonstrated? What happens when they have to compromise what they believe in?
  • Midnighter isn’t your typical “superhero”. In fact, he wouldn’t classify himself as one. He was specifically engineered to eliminate Dr. Bendix’s adversaries without remorse, a task that required numerous enhancements and the removal of certain traits, like empathy.

However, Midnighter has consistently resisted this monolithic character mold. His penchant for violence - killing, maiming, torture, and brutalization - remains, but he’s rechanneled it towards those who genuinely merit punishment. He’s become a protector for the vulnerable and marginalized who can’t defend themselves. For everyone else, he’s a threat.

  • What is your character afraid of? How does avoiding or preventing these fears influence their actions and decisions?
  • Midnighter is haunted by a fear of losing control or lacking self-possession, a consequence of his past when his identity was erased and rebuilt as a lethal weapon. This fear drives him to resist authority and orders from other superheroes. Despite shared objectives, he insists on charting his own path, making him appear unpredictable to his peers. However, Midnighter’s precognition ability ensures he remains synergized with the team.

This fear also permeates his personal life. His combat-centric mindset compels him to view every situation as a win or lose scenario. This perspective has damaged his relationships, notably with Andrew Pulaski, his future spouse. Predicting an unfavorable end to their relationship, Midnighter left Andrew to avoid the perceived loss.

  • What goals does your character have right now? What do they want, and how do they go about getting it?
  • Based on his canon point, Midnighter's goal has been finding himself. The main factor that caused his relationship with Andrew to collapse was his own deception. He created a false persona, Lucas Trent, to relate with Andrew and others like a normal person should be able to.

When this illusion crumbled, leading to their breakup, Midnighter has been on a journey to find those who appreciate his true identity: a reprogrammed assassin with no recall of his past of even his preferences. Additionally, he’s been exploring new sexual and romantic relationships, aiming to learn from his past errors with Andrew.

    Gameplay —
    Areas of Interest / Brainstorming:
I am interested in Midnighter causing chaos as a brutal do-gooder. He is often compared to Batman, but willing to kill. So I would like to see how fellow canonmates handle Midnighter's trademark brutality.
